Analysis of Competition
Before starting the website we needed an understanding of the industry the client was working within. We could identify how similar businesses marketed their website and attracted visitors. We soon realised that high volume organic searches were very achievable with a specific strategy. We also realised that there was an opportunity to use paid advertising through Google. Competitors who are already adverting in this space were spending large sums on a narrow range of keywords indicating that the conversion rate could be very high for this type of website/business.

Working closely with the company’s marketing staff a brand direction was outlined. This then lead to creating a logo – the first step in creating a business identity. Initially a range of eight designs were offered. In this particular example it didn’t take long for a decision to be made and one further round of amendments lead to the final product; a range of high resolution JPG and PNG files along with a scalable vector (EPS) file.

A benefit of being involved with rebranding at the start of the project is that the website can be a part of the new direction and tied-in to match. To ensure both parties are happy with the website design direction, initially a smaller introductory section is used to show different concepts. In this example six ideas were presented to begin with and this led to two full homepages. Some clients like to see internal pages before development but in this case it wasn’t deemed necessary.

Most agencies rely on third-party hosting providers to manage and store the website files. This can be fine until an issue arises. If you have one point of contact for all your hosting needs then I can address any updates and maintenance as a priority when it’s needed. Who better to maintain the website than the person who built it. Almost all our clients host their website on one of my high-speed UK servers but it’s not compulsory. A site that is built to perform in search rankings must be optimised to load quick enough for it not to be penalised. My primary goal as a web developer is to ensure that even the most content heavy pages load within 1.5 seconds over standard bandwidth. This is the single biggest factor to achieving a high Page Insight score from Google.
